How to get to Koneswaram Temple
The Koneswaram Temple is at the head of Konesar Malai (Swami Rock) on the Cliff of Trincomalee. You can reach Trincomalee by either train or bus.
As we were already in Habarana we caught the train from there, and had one change over. This train trip took around 4.5hrs, however from Colombo it is around 7hrs.
We found the train service in Sri Lanka excellent. Trains can cost anything from Rs. 205 to Rs. 1250, depending on what class you go. If possible try to book reserved seats on long journeys and especially weekends as it can get busy. Also 3rd class reserved is great no need for 1st class.
Koneswaram Temple Price
Koneswaram Temple is free to enter however you do have to pay a small donation to the people who look after your shoes out the front of the temple.
Where to stay
If you are planning on visiting the Koneswaram Temple you can either stay in Trincomalee, Nilaveli or Uppuveli.
Nilaveli and Uppuveli are a little bit out from Trincomalee however you can hire a tuk tuk driver for the day for around Rs. 2000.
How much time do you need there
Give yourself half an hour or more at the temple. It’s beautiful inside and out, and also has a great views of the Ocean.
Why should Koneswaram Temple be on my bucket list?
The location, colour and stataues of the temple is enough to make you want to tick it off your bucket list.
However a great time to go however is when “puja” is on. This is the when Hindus do their worshipping and it’s full of energy, a truely invigorating experience.
