Hanoi Train Street, Vietnam

The train departs from the Hanoi Railway Station and makes its way up north through the Old Quarter. There are numerous entrances, but it helps to consult a map of the city beforehand to locate the railway line. A good option is to head south from 5 Trần Phú.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi Train Street
Because this is a residential street, anyone could walk through at anytime of the day. However, the trains pass twice a day, at 3:30PM and 7:30PM.
The sun sets early in Hanoi, so we’d recommend trying to catch the 3:30 train. Arriving half an hour before gives you enough time to walk through a small area and witness the train pass. In saying that, 2:30-3:30 is the busiest time!
This street isn’t much of a secret anymore and there are plenty of tourists strolling around.
Minutes before the trains arrive, everyone will secure a spot against a wall and wait to snap a picture of the speeding train. The train comes from the south, so be sure to face that way!
What to do there
If you get thirsty, there is a cute coffee shop, aptly named The Railway Café, which is located on the side of the tracks. You’ll find a few chairs outside and it’s a great place to meet other on-lookers!
Apart from this café, there are a few places that sell food, mainly fried rice and chicken. So you can grab a quick bite to eat and drink, and once you’re replenished, it’s time for the main attraction; watching the train pass!
Other tips: Be smart. This street has become a tourist attraction and it’s a hot spot for photographs, but be mindful of the train passing times and remain cautious on the tracks.
The street is narrow and it’s necessary to stick to a wall when the train is passing through. It can also be incredibly loud, so if you’re sensitive, bring some ear plugs!

How much time do you need there
Most people will get to the tracks half an hour before the train’s scheduled arrival to have a look around and find a spot to settle into for photographs.
If you’d like more time to walk the railway line, one hour is more than sufficient.
Why should Hanoi Train Street be on my bucket list?
The train street is an absolute highlight if you’ll be spending any time in Hanoi. It’s quite unusual to see a railway line cut through such a narrow and lively street and this experience offers a unique insight into the lives of Hanoi’s locals!
