How to get to Cathedral Cove

You can get to Cathedral Cove by boat, kayak or by foot from the starting point of the Cathedral Cove Walk.

It takes about 25-30 minutes to walk from the starting point. There are a few parkingspots right where the walks starts. An alternative is to park at the Visitor Car Park in Hahei. This will take an extra 20 minute to walk.

Cathedral Cove Price

The cheapest option is to do the free walk. In general you don’t need to pay anything if you’re taking the free walk.

But if you’re parking at the visitor centre and want to take a shuttle to the beginning of the track it’s about 10$ per person. You should consider walking this extra bit if you want to save money.

There is a water taxi available which is about 15$ one way. You can also do a guided Kayak/Boat tour but it is not necessary.

How much time do you need there

Depending on the way you get tot he cathedral cove you need different amount of time. The free walk takes about 30 to 45 minutes one way and inclueds a lot of uphill and downhill parts.

Also there are about 100 stairs at the end oft he walk. If you’re visiting in summer you can take some time for a swim. Picture taking is probably about 30 minutes.

In general I would plan 2-3 hours for cathedral cove, but it’s always depending on what you want to do there.

When is the best time to visit

It definetly is a tourist attraction so you should get there early or in the evening. I’ve been there in winter and for sunset so it wasn’t crowded at all.

Also I would recommend staying there for sunset because the colors are amazing. You should try to avoid holiday season because it can get pretty busy there.

What to do there

It’s the famous location you know from Narnia. Just take some beautiful photos and take in this amazing place. Or if it’s warm enough you should take a swim.

Where to stay

Whitianga ist he closest town and there are also places you could stay overnight. Personally I’ve been sleeping in a capervan and used the app “wikiCamps“ to find the closest freedomcampingspot.

Why should Cathedral Cove be on my bucket list?

It’s a breathtaking place and also a movie spot. Also the walk is stunning so it is definetly worth going there.
