Blue Temple – Chiang Rai, Thailand

Blue Temple (Wat Rong Sear Tean) is located in the Chiang Rai Province in Thailand. The Blue Temple is 16 km from The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), about 2o minutes by car. The outside is gorgeous, but the inside is even more spectacular with beautiful paintings and a huge white Buddha in the centre.

The entrance to the temple is completely free, one of the few temples in Chiang Rai that wont charge an entrance fee. The White Temple is free as well – a perfect combination for budget backpackers.

How much time do you need here

We spent around one hour in the temple, taking pictures, observing how the monks were praying and admiring the inside of the temple, with beautiful paintings in the walls and a big white buddha.

When is the best time to go

The best time to go is morning time. If you visit between 8 and 10 there’ll be a few monks praying and you’ll probably be the only tourist and will be able to enjoy the temple when its most peaceful and empty.

Why should the Blue Temple be on my bucket list?

This is probably the most unique and colourful temple we’ve seen in Thailand so far. It is not a big and monumental temple, but a quieter and more peaceful one. And blue. Blue, blue, blue. Blue is the dominant colour here, making it different to the other Wats in Northern Thailand, adding the original note to it. So beautiful!
