Taj Mahal is located in Agra, India. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 and is one of Wonders of the World.
How to get to Taj Mahal
The most convenient way to get there is via car booked which can be booked via a private tour. You can also get there via public train or bus. All options are very scenic and offer different perspectives. I chose to go via car with a tour company, as there are options to stop and visit other sites along the way.
Where to stay
Hotels are the safest and cleanest bet. Your money goes a far way in India. There are very cost efficient options and there are quite a few within walking distance to the ticketing office for the Taj Mahal.
It costs about $15.00 (USD) for an entrance ticket. The ticket includes access to the Taj Mahal, a bottle of water; shoe covers and shuttle ride to the Taj Mahal.
You can arrange to have a tour guide either from a private tour company, or you hire one on-site. The guides are very helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the Taj Mahal. It’s great to have an idea of the history behind such an important historic site. They are also great with moving the crowds away for photo ops. However, this is completely optional. You can go without a tour guide and explore on your own.
How much time do you need at the Taj Mahal
You can dedicate an entire day to visiting the Taj Mahal. It is a beautiful site in the morning for sunrise, and in the evening for sunset. If you don’t have much time to spare, you can pick one and go from there. It is truly a beauty. You can also occupy your day with visiting other sites in the area. You do have to purchase another ticket for re-entry should you want to.
When is the best time to go
I recommend avoiding Monsoon season (between July – September) so you’ll be able to get great shots of the Taj. Early morning is the best bet. Lines are short and crowds aren’t too crazy.
What to do
If you have a tour guide, he/she will spend quite a bit of time explaining the vast history behind the Taj. Take pictures! Everywhere! There are beautiful gates that surround the Taj Mahal, all worthy of a selfie. There is also the Princess Diana bench. If you are a fan, then I’d suggest joining the long line to get a few shots in. Take your time, and get your photos in, you’ll regret not getting the right shot.
Also, dress the part. Have fun, and enjoy it!!
What not to do
Security is very tight there, so pack very light. Leave your snacks and beverages behind as they will check your bags and dump everything that is not allowed.
Why should Taj Mahal be on my bucket list?
The Taj Mahal is such a wonder and beauty to visit. It will take your breath away every time you catch a glimpse of it. It is a great honor and privilege to be able to walk in the footsteps of the kings and queens that built these monuments. If you have the opportunity to, why not take advantage. If it’s not on your bucket list, it will be one you are able to stand in its presence.
