Buddha Park – Vientiane, Laos

Buddha Park is located 25 km southeast from Vientiane, Laos, along the Mekong river. Buddha Park is a park with over 200 Hindu and Buddhist statues. It was built in 1958 by a monk named Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, he studied both Hinduism and Buddhism. And that explains why there is a lot of sculptures of Buddha and Hindu gods, demons and animals from both sides.

How to get to Buddha Park

The cheapest way to get to Buddha park is to take one of the public busses for only 6.000 kip. But make sure to tell the buss driver to stop by the park. If you don’t wanna sit in a buss with a lot of local people you can take a tuk tuk, the normal price is 70.000 kip for a tuk tuk. Feeling confident on a scooter you can absolutely drive yourself to the park.

Where to stay

Vientiane. A lot of people choose to skip Vientiene or just do a day and don’t do the Buddha park. I recommend that if you have time to stay there minimum 3 days. For Buddha park it’s all up to you, some people just go and take photos but you can easily relax in the park and use good time there. It’s the perfect place to have a picnic or eat lunch at the restaurant in the end up the park with a view of the lake.

When to visit Buddha Park

Every season I think is great, I went here in August and thought it was a good time because there is not overflowing with tourist and the temperature is good. Go early during the day or later because of the hot sun.

What to do

Take your time and see all of the interesting details in the sculptures. The best spot for photography here is on top of the giant pumpkin structure standing about three stories high. The entrance is crafted to look like a demon’s mouth (about three metres high) with a stone ladder inside leading to a bird’s eye view of the entire park.

What not to do:

As it’s Buddha statues and some statues can be tempting so make funny photos with, be respectful of the place. And don’t forget sunscreen!
